Solantico Riserva Salice Salentino

Now that the colder temperatures have firmly settled in, I find myself seeking out big fat red wines.  Something to warm me up as I read in front of a roaring fire on a cold evening.  Lately, I have been picking up the Solantico Riserva Salice Salentino 2009 ($14.95) from Italy.

This big, full-bodied wine is made up of a blend of two grape varieties that are native to Italy: Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera.  Its aromas of cherry, plum, vanilla, baking spices and dried herbs come through on the palate and are nicely balanced by a solid acidity and strong tannins.  Great with braised meats or something saucy.  Beef ragu over pasta....don't get me started.  It also makes a tasty, comforting sipper on a dark autumn evening.  Perfect for those quiet nights when the weather outside is frightful...
